Our New Spring Basketball Program
Coach Sean Simmons (BAMS Head Coach; BAHS JV Coach) approached the Boy's Basketball Program Chair in January 2026 with a vision to bring Bel Air Basketball back to the top of Harford County.
We gained BARC approval and are piloting a dual-approach program this year. We will assess our outcomes and make revisions for 2027. Parents should acknowledge that we have a plan, but are retaining flexibility as we formalize interest. We want to offer a high quality program for as low a cost as possible.
1. "Skills-Clinic" style teams. [$65/player; 13-weeks pending blackout dates]
a. Age Groups: 9-10, 11-12, 13-15.
b. 20 players per age group. Tryouts are scheduled and will only be used as needed (if more than 20 register).
c. LOOSE age cutoff 1SEP25. Will take 8-year olds with coach endorsement and 16-year olds as space allows.
d. Players should expect to practice fundamentals, learn the offense/defense implemented by the school, and scrimmage.
e. 1-hour per week from 23 MAR - 15 JUN. [Tuesdays 6-7p, 7-8p, 8-9p in age group order]
f. In April, players will receive a custom reversible jersey with their last name.
2. Competitive Tournament Team(s). [Roughly $150 player; $115 + $900 / # on team]
a. Target age group(s): 14-16, 16-18 [Holding COMBINED tryouts]
b. Loose age cutoff 1SEP25; highly skilled 13-year olds are welcome to tryout.
c. Current plan is to field up to two teams of up to 15 players; will depend on player interest.
d. 2x 1.5 hour practices per week [Monday and Wednesday; 6-730p and 730-9p in age group order]
e. In April, players will receive a fully custom uniform (reversible jersey, reversible shorts, warmup shirt).

i. 25-26 APR: Ellicott City, MD; Map (50 minutes no traffic)
ii. 23-24 May: Cooksville, MD; Map (1 hour no traffic)
iii. 6-7 June: Boyds, MD; Map (90 minutes no traffic)
Uniforms and jerseys are the same uniform as the Bel Air Wildcats Travel Teams. Current players from these teams have the option of using their existing uniform/jersey in exchange for a reduced registration fee. We intend to maintain our uniform design- so if your son makes a travel team this fall, you'd also have the option of using your existing jersey/uniform to reduce your registration fee.
2026 Spring Basketball Tryouts
We will conduct combined tryouts for up to two competitive teams with up to 15 players per team that will enter 3 tournaments this Spring.
For our skills programs, we will run 3 age groups with up to 20 kids per team. If we have too much interest in the program, then we will conduct tryouts and, in future years, try and find ways to accomodate more boys. Tryouts are scheduled as outlined below, but will only take place as needed. If we cancel a younger age group, then we will move the older groups to earlier slots (e.g. no 9-10 tryouts would mean that 11-12 happens at 6pm and 13-15 happens at 7pm). We will send final tryout times on 6 March. Registrations will CLOSE on 4 March.
1. Competitive Tournament Team Tryouts: Monday, 9 MARCH, BAMS
Combined tryout from 6-8pm. Will form up to 2 teams of up to 15 players.
2. "Skills-Clinic" Tryouts: Tuesday, 10 MARCH, BAMS
All three age group registrations are over our 20 person capacity and we will conduct tryouts to select the 20 participants. We are only doing this to avoid overcrowding and ensure we offer a quality program.
9-10: 6-7pm at BAMS on 10 March
11-12: 7-8PM at BAMS on 10 March
13-15: 8-9pm at BAMS on 10 March

Registration for Spring Basketball tryouts is free. Please only register if you are committed to joining the program. Players selected for participation will receive a follow-on registration link.
